Lenya Wilks...

Her pleasant, humorous and girlish demeanor pulls you in, but on stage she takes charge and commands your attention with her strong, melodious vocals.

Lenya Wilks, the youngest of three children, hailed from Linstead, St. Catherine. She made her name as a strong competitor in the Digicel Rising Star Competition in 2007.

Lenya has a slew of experiences that shaped her now budding career. It seemed that even as a child she knew she would be a singer. At aged 6, her grandmother asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up and her response was that she wanted to sing like Whitney Houston. She started early as a musician attending the Trinity Preparatory School in Linstead where she learned to play the Keyboards, conga drums and the recorder.

Later on when she attended the Charlemont High School where she joined the choir, and because of her advanced vocal ability, she was promptly moved up to the senior choir. This was both to her and the choir’s advantage, for as the lead singer, Lenya led the choir to win numerous trophies and gold medals. In one year the Charlemont High School choir won 22 gold medals. In 2004 and 2005, Lenya won the trophy for best soloist at the JCDC Musical Festival. Concurrently, in 2005 she was placed 2nd in the JCDC Children’s Gospel Festival. As a result, Lenya began doing performances including the Prime Minister’s Youth Conference along with weddings and private parties.

In 2007, Lenya was persuaded by her Music teacher Nigel Powell – brother of famed Osafa Powell - to enter the Digicel Rising Star competition. Lenya remembers her experience at the competition as being “very exciting! I learned so much from the competition and I’m so grateful that it offered me a platform to develop and display my talent. I cried the night I left in 4th place, but God had another great plan for me that I walked straight into”.

And rightly so, for that very night, the administrative office of Harmony House who was following Lenya in the competition called and requested to meet with her the following day.  That meeting would birth a longstanding relationship between Lenya and Beres Hammond as the newest addition to his Harmony House family.

Lenya has toured extensively with Mr. Hammond and the Harmony House entourage since 2007 as a solo act. She played many territories including the USA, Europe and the Caribbean with raving reviews. She is currently putting the finishing touches to her debut album dubbed ‘Innocence Gone’ now being produced by Beres Hammond with some songs co-written and written by Lenya herself. The album promises to poise Lenya well among her musical female peers, and is anxiously awaited. “Mr. Hammond has pulled so much more from me as a musician,” she smiled “ I never knew I had so much in me musically, it amazes me even now, I myself am being entertained by me. I have grown in leaps and bounds these past 2 years… my innocence is gone!” The album, ‘Innocence Gone’ is scheduled to be released in April 2010.
